Tire wear sensors could become more popular in the years to come, especially among professionals and fleet managers. Continental has notably tested its system, which is likely to be marketed.
There were brake wear and tire pressure sensors, there may be in the near future the tire wear sensor. For this, you need an electronic tool capable of measuring in real time the depth of the grooves, the main indicator of tire wear (even if it is not the only one).
Continental has just completed a test phase with the Share Now fleet of vehicles in Denmark to validate the relevance and reliability of the chip housed in the tire and capable of measuring its wear in real time. 600 vehicles have been fitted with these sensors, and for Continental the pilot project has been a success.
The German giant has collaborated with Traffilog for the management and reporting of data to fleet managers. This is indeed where such technology comes into its own: it allows managers of these huge fleets to better manage tire changes on a large number of vehicles (in what is called "JIT" maintenance , for "Just in time"), without having to check the condition of the tires vehicle by vehicle.
Continental speaks of a precision to the "millimeter" for this technical solution which would be a first. It is true that at present, no manufacturer offers a sensor capable of these measurements. But what about the sensor once the tires have worn out? Is it reusable, or does it go to the dumpster with the tire? Continental says nothing about this.
