The case of the defective Takata airbags seems endless: Ford must recall no less than 3 million vehicles in the United States.
The American road safety organization, which usually acts simply as a data aggregator on the problems of manufacturers on their models, has just ordered Ford to recall some 3 million vehicles on American soil.
Why such an order, when the NHTSA does not have the habit of coercing? Ford, but also Mazda, had opposed the recall campaigns of the famous defective airbags of the Japanese company Takata, which has since sunk.
The concern relates to the airbag inflation system, deemed defective by the NHTSA, but which would not pose a problem for the safety of drivers according to Ford and Mazda. From now on, the two brands are obliged to recall: 3 million for Ford, including Ranger, Fusion, Edge, but also Lincoln and Mercury, and 5800 only for Mazda.
It should be remembered that since 2013, around twenty people have died due to defective inflation of these airbags, due in particular to the use of ammonium nitrate, which deteriorates over time and can explode if exposed to moisture or heat.
