Bugatti's future within the Volkswagen Group will be discussed during the first half of the year, with a final decision to come in the short term.
Will sell, won't sell? The presence of a large number of luxury brands within the Volkswagen Group's portfolio is regularly put on the table. It must be said that the buying fever of the early 2000s of the Piech family is a long way off, and now, faced with the great challenge of switching to electric and new technologies, Volkswagen is doing its accounts.
Bugatti has in particular been the subject of insistent rumors concerning a possible sale, in particular to Rimac, the small Croatian manufacturer of electric cars which is arousing the enthusiasm of brands such as Porsche.
One of the possible agreements would be a Bugatti/Rimac association, and in exchange, an increase in the capital of Rimac by Porsche to the tune of more than 15%. The Porsche boss confirmed that Rimac and Bugatti could "match" from a technological point of view, and that several scenarios with different corporate structures are on the table. The interested party “thinks that a solution will be taken during the first half of the year”.
For the Volkswagen group, Bugatti has always represented a showcase that has been slow to achieve profitability. From now on, the “hobby” brands as certain senior officials of the German group qualify are obviously very much discussed internally. We'll know more about Bugatti by July.
