This measure aims to combat driving under the influence of alcohol by encouraging motorists to self-assess before driving.
From July 1, 2021, establishments that sell alcoholic beverages to take away will have to offer breathalyzers for sale. These should be placed near the shelf with the largest volume of drinks, or at the checkout level for specialized stores, such as wine merchants. The obligation will also concern online sales sites.
This measure is the application of article 100 of the mobility orientation law. It was first selected during the Interministerial Road Safety Committee of January 2018 (the one that gave birth to the 80 km / h).
It is therefore a road safety measure, in order to fight against driving under the influence of alcohol. By promoting the purchase of breathalyzers, the government wants to encourage motorists to self-test before driving. The establishments concerned will also have an obligation to provide information on the importance of self-screening, with a specific display.
Remember that the alcohol level limit is set at 0.25 mg/L of exhaled air and 0.10 mg/L of exhaled air for probationary licences. We also remind you that in the spring of 2020, a decree repealed the obligation to have a breathalyzer in your car!
