Peugeot dominates a sluggish market. On the model side, the Clio beats the 208 for the first time this year.
Key figures for April 2021
- 140,428 new passenger cars registered, -25.4% compared to April 2019
- Peugeot leads the manufacturer rankings with 26,143 sales.
- The Clio leads the model rankings with 7,801 sales.
In April 2020, France was in full confinement, the first, the strictest. The automotive market had virtually come to a standstill, with only 21,000 vehicles registered. April 2021, the country was confined again. But the rules were much more flexible. By appointment, it was thus possible to go to the showroom for purchase and delivery. What limit the breakage for dealers. As proof, 140,428 new passenger cars were registered last month.
But, despite the less restrictive rules, the health situation still weighs heavily on the French market. Added to this is the shortage of electronic components, which is shutting down factories. Result, compared to April 2019, pre-crisis level, we are at - 25.4%. And since the beginning of the year, sales have fallen by 21%.
In this still particular context, where these results must be taken with a grain of salt, Peugeot continues to dominate the market. The Lion is also taking quite a distance from Renault in terms of the 2021 aggregate. The Losange is suffering, but it is highlighting its new strategy focused on the most profitable channels (especially individuals). Consolation for him: in April, the Clio took over the top of the model ranking, which had not happened for many months. On the other hand, the 2008 continues to dominate the Captur, slowed down by the stop of the diesel.
After having performed well at the start of the year with the arrival of the Sandero, Dacia is plunging back, finding itself behind Volkswagen and, more unusually, Toyota. The Japanese is in good shape, with a stable result compared to 2019. The new Yaris, again in the top 10 models, carries the brand. But there is more impressive: Hyundai. 10th among brands, Korean is up 20% compared to 2019! And since the beginning of the year, its sales have increased by 11.4%. Among the few brands to do better than in 2019, there are also Skoda (+ 2.9%) and Mini (+ 11.9%).
Many experienced a new "horribilis month", and not the least: Nissan with - 40%, Ford with - 43%, Fiat with - 46%. Among the reasons, in addition to confinement of course, there is dependence on sales channels weighed down by the crisis, in particular rental companies, or the expectation of novelty (the Qashqai for example).
