Ford and BMW have decided to invest 130 million dollars together in the company Solid Power, which specializes in solid-state batteries.
The race for the solid electrolyte battery is on. Volkswagen, which bet its coin several years ago on QuantumScape, an American company specializing in research on energy storage. The first so-called "solid" batteries should see the light of day on production models by the middle of the decade.
But Volkswagen was until today one of the rare groups to communicate on this technology. That changes, as Ford and BMW announced a $130 million investment in another specialist company, Solid Power.
The arrival of these batteries, especially at BMW, should however be later than at Volkswagen, since the Bavarian giant was already talking about the end of the decade. Only Toyota seems to be able to compete with VW's schedule, since the Japanese manufacturer plans to introduce solid batteries on production vehicles from 2025.
