BMW is aiming for 50% of electric sales by 2030 worldwide and above all is emphasizing the circular economy, with the recycling of batteries.
A battery is a complex element made up of a metal frame, lithium and other metals which have the particularity of being, for some, highly eligible for recycling. A circular economy highlighted by the theme of the IAA 2021 at BMW: "RE:THINK, RE:DUCE, RE:USE, RE:CYCLE".
At the annual BMW conference, group boss Oliver Zipse explained that CO2 emissions would be reduced by 200 million tonnes by 2030. , that of BMW emphasizes the complete cycle, from production to use of the vehicle.
With the new generation of batteries, BMW plans to reduce their production footprint by around 50% compared to the current generation. Renewable energy in factories, new chemistry in batteries and recycling will be on the agenda for BMW, which gives the example of the iX30: the SUV would thus have 30% recycled aluminum and 50% recycled nickel. Remember also that the famous "rare earths" are no longer essential for electric motors.
The following table shows the 3 parts of the life of an automobile: production, supply chains and use by the driver. From 2030, BMW is aiming for 50% of electric sales worldwide.
