The "Data for Road Safety" partnership, which has the support of the European Commission, aims to open up the sharing of data on road risks between different manufacturers. Ford, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo are already in this project, and call on other brands to collaborate.
This is a European project that brings together major automotive and transport players, and has a very simple objective: to pool field data collected in real time by vehicles on the road in order to have a hazard database, searchable by cars of several different brands.
For this, it was necessary to bring together actors who are normally rivals. BMW, Ford, Volvo and Mercedes are the first to collaborate on this project which also brings together ACEA (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers), Here (GPS) and the German Ministry of Transport.
Data such as broken down vehicles, slippery roads or reduced visibility can thus be exchanged remotely between cars of different brands to improve the reporting and warning of risks.
Cars start communicating with each other about dangers
"Anonymous data from various vehicle elements, such as the use of fog lights, emergency braking or airbag activation, are analyzed on board to determine the presence and location of potential hazards", Ford said in its press release. Data, anonymous, is sent immediately to other vehicles if deemed relevant.
This private/public partnership should now attract other major manufacturers in order to improve risk detection in Europe on the roads.
