In January, the number of deaths on French roads fell greatly: - 35 %.
171 people lost their lives on the roads of mainland France last month. It is 93 less than in January 2020, a strong decline of 35 %.Good news that has two explanations.
First, road safety recalls that the comparison is made with a month from January 2020 to accidentality among the highest in the last ten years, due to mild weather which has favored travel. But even by comparing to 2019, the decline remains important, with - 28 %.
This is where the other explanation comes in: the health context, with a reduction in travel.Unless they are derogated, these have been prohibited throughout the country since mid-January between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m..There is also the use of telework, with French people who therefore leave their cars less.
This can be seen by looking at pedestrian mortality. While it is traditionally raised in winter period, due to poor visibility in the morning and in the evening, it fell: 26 pedestrians were killed, about twenty less compared to January 2020.10 cyclists have lost their lives, 3 less.Another factor that seems to arise from the context: a sharp drop in mortality for over 65, which move less to protect themselves from the virus.
The number of accidents fell by 24 %, at 3,472.Compared to 2019, however, it is however only 13 % decrease.
