Ford will finally produce its own modular platforms, essential bases for launching new electric models. However, we will not see the fruit of this before 2025.
Ford has never really made it simple when it comes to platforms. Currently, the brand's electric, the Mustang Mach-E, is based on a heavily modified thermal base. The next arrivals will be on an MEB platform borrowed from Volkswagen, the fault of the absence of a real modular base for electric vehicles at Ford.
However, the American manufacturer is preparing two specific platforms. The first will be used for private vehicles (SUVs, sedans, others), and the second will be specifically studied for pick-ups, while Ford has just unveiled an F150 Lightning which, again, is built on a very largely thermal F150 structure. modified.
This is a multi-billion dollar investment for Ford, which did not turn to Volkswagen for nothing. The MEB platform allows the American to "wait" and offer electric cars, until the real Fords with new generation batteries see the light of day. And that won't happen before 2025. On that date, the Mustang Mach-E and F150 Lightning will have a suite with a dedicated platform, built in-house.
Ford+Ford just unveils the details of its plan, called "Ford +". The primary objective put forward is to become the world leader in electric utility vehicles. Ford already has a strong commercial vehicle footprint, particularly in Europe and the UK.
From 2030, Ford will have at least 40% of its sales in zero emissions. Ford specifies that 70,000 people have already reserved a copy of the F150 Lightning, the brand's first electric pickup. In total, Ford plans to invest 30 billion dollars by 2025, in particular in the creation of platforms but also solid batteries, which will be offered in a few years on electric models with the blue oval.
