The agreement between Volkswagen and Ford provided for the American brand to use the ID.3 platform to develop an electric compact. Eventually, Ford will launch not just one, but several models on the German base.
Ford and Volkswagen are now partners in various projects. On the one hand, Volkswagen develops and produces commercial vehicles for Volkswagen, including the next generation of the Amarok pick-up. Conversely, Volkswagen lends its modular MEB platform (that of the VW ID.3 and ID.4, but also the Audi Q4 e-tron) to Ford so that the American can launch new electric models by reducing the investments.
An unsurprising choice given the fact that Ford does not have a modular platform designed from the start only for compact electric models. But if the agreement provided for only one model, things could change.
Without confirming anything, the president of Ford Europe seems to indicate that the two companies are "thinking about new opportunities". Ford's first electric vehicle based on the MEB platform will be placed under the Mustang Mach-E SUV, and will see the light of day in 2023. But this will probably not be enough in Europe where the intermediate compact segment is crucial.
