Ford has just made one of the largest investments by a manufacturer in South Africa. Nearly one billion euros will be injected into the Ford plant, which will produce the future Ranger but also the next Volkswagen Amarok.
Ford announces a huge investment for its African plant in Silverton, which opened its doors in 1969 in the suburbs of Pretoria. Nearly one billion euros will be allocated to this site to update a factory that produced the Mazda BT-50 and the Ranger. Now, the latter is the only vehicle that leaves the assembly lines of the Ford Silverton plant.
But not for very long. Volkswagen and Ford have signed partnership agreements that will allow the German brand to share the development costs of its Amarok pick-up level, which will be presented next year. Eventually, the production rate of the plant will increase from 168,000 to 200,000 units per year.
Future generations of Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok will be based on a common platform. The exchanges of good practices will not stop there since Ford and Volkswagen will produce utilities together, while the American brand will take advantage of the German group's modular MEB platform to launch an electric vehicle.
