It's a little blow for Hyundai, who is currently preparing the launch of its novelty, the ioniq "5".The Korean manufacturer announces that following fires on Kona EVs, more than 80,000 batteries of electric cars will have to be changed in the world.
It is a reminder ultimately minor in terms of volumes of cars concerned, but the amount is astronomical. And for good reason, Hyundai will have to replace some 82,000 batteries of electric cars, mainly on Kona EVs (but also some ioniq). The recall should cost around 740 million euros in Hyundai.
The story started in January when the South Korean authorities opened an investigation into the first wave of recall of Hyundai, which mentioned at the end of last year a simple problem of defective battery management software. The problem is ultimately more serious than that since it is necessary to fully replace the batteries of the vehicles concerned.14 cases of fires have already been noted by Hyundai in the world.
The Kona EV battery supplier, LG Chem, is already the subject of accusations on the part of the Korean Transport Ministry, but the electronics giant refutes any error on the manufacture of battery cells.
All Kona EVs produced between 2018 and 2020 will be recalled for a change of batteries, which means that French customers are concerned.
