In an attempt to relaunch, Smart intends to ride the SUV wave with a mini-model which will be unveiled at the German international show in early September, near Munich.
Smart may have tried the electric adventure very early on, but the sauce did not take. Yet it was the ideal urban machine. Very compact, fast enough to get out of cities, and 100% electric. But a prohibitive price and a perhaps a little too premature arrival in a market not yet ready for electricity got the better of the Smart Electric.
Today, the manufacturer is trying to revive itself with the help of Geely, the Chinese giant that owns Volvo, Lotus and Lynk & Co. A 50/50 joint venture with Daimler has been created for Geely to produce Smarts in China.
And the first model of this relaunch phase is none other than a mini SUV, which will be unveiled as a concept at the IAA 2021, in early September in Munich. A small electric SUV, of course, which adopts certain style details already seen in particular on the Opel Adam, with this drop from the rear pillar.
This new addition to the Smart catalog will be developed on the Geely group's SEA modular base, which is used in particular at Volvo.
