Norway is the first country in the world to have a mix of electric vehicles above 50% over one year. 2020 was therefore a historic year for this market, which is still very special.
The abundance of charging stations, the high standard of living and the very "green" culture of Norwegians, who have long been focused on green energy (despite a flourishing oil industry...) has meant that this market has quickly become that of the electric car. But 2020 has been a very special year.
Over the whole of 2020, sales of electric cars accounted for 54.3% of total new car sales. In December, the share of electric even reached 66.7%. And the profile of the ranking changes: if Tesla dominated the Top 10 electric cars for a while, now the others are fighting back. The best seller of 2020 is none other than the Audi e-tron, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 and the Volkswagen ID 3.
This ranking is interesting because it shows that as the offer develops in Europe, sales move. Tesla had very little competition until now in the premium and "high-end" generalist, but that is changing, and 2021 should only accentuate this phenomenon.
For Volkswagen, the forecasts are clear: 90% of the Norwegian subsidiary's sales in 2021 could be electric. And anyway, Norway will ban heat engines from dealerships by 2025...
