From 2022, autonomous emergency braking will become mandatory on all new models of approved vehicles. Problem: this technology does not go well with manual gearboxes.
European legislation is changing, and driving aids are increasing, some will become mandatory. Just as ESP was once declared mandatory, autonomous emergency braking will become so from 2022 in Europe for all new vehicle models. A technology already widespread today, but not yet systematically installed.
Emergency braking that does not go well with the mechanical gearbox. Indeed, in an emergency situation, if the device brakes in the driver's seat to avoid a frontal impact and the clutch pedal is not pressed, the engine stalls. A somewhat special case that does not happen with an automatic gearbox, where the AEB (Autonomous emergency braking) is much easier to integrate.
Will the technology have the skin of the manual gearbox? Emergency braking is not the only device that is difficult to combine with a clutch pedal. The adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function, very useful in traffic jams and on fast lanes, but also essential for setting up autonomous driving, does not go with a manual gearbox.
Subaru has confirmed to our colleagues at Automotive News Canada that if North American legislation imposes autonomous emergency braking, the brand could review its position on the manual transmission, still present in the catalog.
