Volkswagen's compact regained the number 1 spot in sales in Europe in May, ahead of the Renault Clio.
The title of the best-selling car in Europe has never been so disputed! Since the beginning of the year, several models have managed to climb to the top of the rankings, including the Toyota Yaris, the Peugeot 208 and the Volkswagen Golf. It was the latter that won in May, according to data provided by Jato.
The German compact even takes quite a revenge, since 23,106 copies were sold last month on the Old Continent, against 15,891 copies for the 208, which fell to 7th position. In a context that remains complicated, the lioness resists however better than the VW, with - 22% compared to May 2019 (pre-crisis year) against - 35% for the Golf.
While it had been left behind in recent months by its compatriot, the Renault Clio has risen to second place, with 19,593 sales… but a sharp drop compared to 2019 with - 40%. In May, the podium is completed by the Fiat 500. Note the fourth place of the Volkswagen T-Roc, down only 4% compared to 2019. The SUV is also the first competitor of the Golf! The Yaris 4 confirms its cannon debut, as does the new Dacia Sandero, 9th in May.
As for electric models, the Tesla Model 3 once again dominates the market, with 8,762 registrations. It is ahead of the Volkswagen ID.3 (6,031 sales) and Renault Zoé (5,738). On the plug-in hybrid side, the best seller is the Ford Kuga (4,794 registrations with this engine), ahead of the Peugeot 3008 (3,954) and the Volvo XC40 (3,833).
A total of 1,073,987 cars were sold in Europe in May. If the market is soaring compared to May 2020, with + 73%, it is still much slowed down by the Covid-19. The balance sheet is indeed down 25% compared to May 2019. The Volkswagen group is in great shape, with a market share of 28.1%, the second highest score since 2001! It benefits from the surge in sales of electric cars, which reached a record share of 16%!
