End clap for the dispute between Daimler and Nokia. The German group will settle the case amicably by agreeing to pay for the use of technologies resulting from patents filed by Nokia.
The case caused a stir last year: Nokia was suing Daimler for fraudulent and unauthorized use of certain on-board technologies based on patents filed by the Finnish giant. Daimler, and in particular its Mercedes subsidiary, risked a lot if Nokia won the appeal with the suspension of sales of all the brand's cars until the case was settled.
The center of contention was how Daimler negotiated the price of Nokia technologies, which continued to practice supplier buying, at favorable rates for the German giant, but not for Nokia.
Mercedes was the last "refractory" manufacturer not to go through the Avanci pool for the acquisition of patented technologies and their payment by royalty. Audi and BMW have been following this path for two years now. Daimler and Nokia did not disclose the details of the agreement, but in any case it allows Mercedes to benefit from Nokia patents without fear of other legal proceedings which could have been problematic in Europe for car sales.
