This represents more than 10% of Michelin's workforce in the country. This will be done without forced departure.
In an interview with Le Figaro, Florent Menegaux, president of Michelin, confirms a new departure plan at Le Bibendum in France. 2,300 jobs will be cut in France, while the company has 21,000 in the country (and 130,000 worldwide).
The plan will first concern administrative jobs, in particular at the headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, but all the factories will also be affected. After announcing the closure of the Roche-sur-Yon (Vendée) factory in 2020, Florent Menegaux indicates however that there is no other closure planned for the moment. He also makes it known that the 2,300 departures will take place over three years, without being forced. A little more than half will be pre-retirements.
For the boss of Michelin, the world's leading tire manufacturer, it is "an industrial productivity improvement plan" for historic sites in France. And he says that "this restructuring would have been launched even if the Covid crisis had not taken place." Discussions with the unions had started before the start of the pandemic. Michelin is facing profound structural changes in the global tire market, marked in particular by the massive arrival of low-cost products
Florent Menegaux points out that in France "the future lies in industrial activities with a strong technological dimension, industries of the future with high added value". The company will notably invest in the hydrogen fuel cell, with a first plant planned for the end of 2021 near Lyon.
