BMW completes the development of its new small coupe. Good news, the Series 2 remains a propulsion.
At a time when brands are cleaning up their range, in particular to reinvest in electric models, BMW is not giving up on its smallest coupe. The new generation of the Series 2 will be unveiled in a few weeks.
As is tradition, BMW gives a taste of it with photos of camouflaged prototypes, taken during the final development sessions, between the Nürburgring circuit and the country roads around Munich. The brand promises "sporty driving pleasure in the tradition of the BMW 2002". With very good news for purists: while the Series 1 has become a traction, the Series 2 remains a propulsion.
In the words of the brand, the firm's engineers strive to achieve "perfectly controllable handling in all situations, fascinating cornering dynamics, optimized traction in all weather and road conditions and perfectly balanced ride comfort". Holy program!
BMW confirms that there will always be an M version at the top of the range. A notch below, we will find the M240i. It will hide under its hood a 374 hp in-line six-cylinder, coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The M240i will have xDrive all-wheel drive (which favors the rear) and an M sport differential on the rear axle, which helps distribute power between the wheels.
The entire Series 2 range will benefit from approximately 12% increased static torsional stiffness. Body roll will be reduced through increased track widths. There will also be progressive damping as standard, which "significantly optimizes the balance between sportiness and driving comfort." A SelectDrive M suspension, with a choice of configuration, will be offered as an option.
BMW says production will begin in late summer.
