Opel plans to give a sequel to the Insignia. But the new model should move away from the traditional sedan.
Opel had relaunched itself well on the station wagon market with the Insignia, replacing the Vectra. The first generation, launched in 2009, sold more than 900,000 copies. But the second, which appeared at the end of 2016, is experiencing more mixed results. It suffers in the face of competition from SUVs.
However, the brand does not intend to leave the station wagon market. In an interview given to Automotive News, the boss of the brand, Michael Lohscheller, recalls that the Insignia remains the flagship of the firm and that it is important to have such a model in the range. Opel will therefore keep a presence in the D segment.
But Michael Lohscheller is well aware that for general brands, traditional sedans no longer attract customers. He therefore makes a clear observation: it would not be a good idea to continue on this path. He emphasizes that Opel knows how to adapt and he therefore expects his development teams to do the same to imagine the continuation of the Insignia.
The replacement for the sedan should thus be more original. An approach similar to that of Citroën, a cousin within Stellantis, which has just returned to the D segment with the C5 X, a mix of sedan, station wagon and SUV. Ford has also imagined the Evos, a "crossover sedan" that we would see instead of the Mondeo, even if the brand indicates that this model is currently reserved for China.
Beware, however, of the bet on originality. Opel has already tried on the D segment the Signum, a nice commercial flop.
