The biggest innovative companies hardly change over the years. PSA remains at the top of the number of patents filed in 2020 ahead of Safran and Groupe Valeo. Renault ranks fifth.
Each year, the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property) publishes the ranking of companies that have filed the most patents. Even if this indicator should be taken with a pinch of salt, it nevertheless partly indicates the dynamics of a group in the field of research and innovation. Obviously, this does not indicate that it will put into production all the patents filed. Sometimes, some companies are a little over the top in this area, a sign that we must keep a step back on the real level of innovation.
PSA has in any case settled permanently at the top of the ranking. After having left the first place for two years, the French automobile giant is back on the front of the stage, having filed 1,239 patent applications in 2020. PSA is ahead of Safran (1,103 applications published) and Groupe Valeo (819 applications). published). The other major French automobile company, Groupe Renault, comes in fifth position with 483 published requests, or one third of PSA.
The automobile remains one of the engines of innovation in France, if not the main one: PSA, Valeo, Renault, Michelin and Faurecia indeed occupy the Top 10 of the largest patent holders in France.
