The number of deaths on roads has decreased again in February, with - 20 %.
Another sharp drop in road mortality. In February 2021, the number of deaths on French roads fell by 20 %.And the comparison is made with a month of February 2020 already below the average of the last ten years.175 people were killed (the best month of February dates back to 2017, with 204 deaths).
Obviously, the health situation is not unrelated to this good result.Road safety indicates that travel restrictions (in February, the whole territory was under 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.mortality.
It even advances a figure: "The death gain is estimated to be due for 2/3 at the curfew and for 1/3 to reducing travel during the day".The curfew has a beneficial effect on pedestrian mortality, while it is generally raised in winter, with a night falling early: 23 pedestrians were killed, 15 less than in February 2020.
However, still according to road safety, the drop in traffic in February would not be so marked. While it was - 15 % in January, it is estimated at - 10 % in February. It is even even lower at the end of the month, due to the evolution of weather conditions (rather bad in early February, very good at the end). The French were also able to go on vacation.
The mortality of motorcyclists (32 killed) has also dropped very slightly and remained above the decade average. For motorists, it is - 17 % (96 killed), with a marked drop in mortality for young people and seniors. The first go out less in the evening, the latter go out less during the day.
For its part, the number of accidents fell 22 %, to 3,158.
