One of the largest electric car manufacturers in the world unveils at the Shanghai Motor Show a car capable of achieving 1000 km on one charge. But behind this figure, we must pay attention to the standard to validate such autonomy.
The manufacturer BYD is totally unknown in France, yet it is one (if not "the") of the world's largest manufacturers of electric cars in terms of volumes sold. The Chinese giant is obviously present at the Shanghai show, and it hits hard, with flattering figures and impressive data.
Beneath its air of a nice city car, the BYD EA1 is a car that actually houses the brand's brand new 800V architecture. It should be remembered that at the present time, rare are the world's manufacturers to have switched to such an operating voltage, which makes it possible to obtain high powers, both in recharging and at the wheels.
The battery, of the LFP type, is no longer just a "simple" pack housed in the floor. BYD's new platform makes it possible to house the cells almost everywhere in the structure of the car. This reduces the weight and final bulk. Above all, this 800V battery could power one or more motors propelling the EA1 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, and could cover a thousand kilometers on one charge.
But we must remember one thing: China has not adopted the WLTP certification cycle, used in Europe. It remained on the much more permissive NEDC cycle. It's a safe bet that the 1000 km would thus be greatly reduced in the event of a WLTP test.
