BMW plans to adopt solid-state batteries for its future electric vehicles. But that won't happen for the next decade.
Apart from Volkswagen, which is investing in a single platform of electric cars, it cannot be said that the German brands have so far entered the dance perfectly. This is particularly the case at BMW, which is still awaiting a sequel to the i3, and which has no modular platform specifically dedicated to the electric car. For that, it will be necessary to wait until 2025 at the Bavarian brand, which declines while waiting for its thermal models with electric: i4 and iX3, in particular.
Today, BMW confirms that the first so-called "solid" batteries will arrive from 2030 on the German brand's sixth generation of electrified vehicles, which promises production costs and autonomy similar to those of the combustion engine models we know. today.
BMW says it carries out its solid battery developments in-house. A strategy opposed to that of the Volkswagen group, which has invested heavily in an American specialist in the field, hoping to reap the benefits before 2025. The first BMW demonstrator of this upcoming generation of energy storage will not be presented. before 2025.
