The automotive group Stellantis and the Taiwanese assembler Foxconn have announced the creation of a 50/50 joint venture, called Mobile Drive. Based in the Netherlands, it will focus on connected cars and infotainment.
Go back five years, and you will have a common song from all car manufacturers: we do not want computer and digital giants for our on-board computer systems, and our user interfaces. Today, the speeches have changed a lot. Volvo has handed over to Google, Renault will do so on its new Mégane, and Stellantis announces a non-binding alliance with Foxconn.
The Taiwanese giant, historical assembler for Apple, has joined forces with Stellantis to create the Mobile Drive joint venture, based in the Netherlands.
It will be used in particular for the development of the connected vehicle, remote storage but also and above all for infotainment, an area in which car manufacturers have always been lagging behind specialists in the field.
In dotted line, this is an alliance that should allow Stellantis to develop new multimedia systems and digital instrumentation for future models. Foxconn is in any case on all automotive fronts since in addition to software development, the Taiwanese will also produce electric SUVs for Byton from next year.
