Tesla boss Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter that the manufacturer would again accept payment in Bitcoin if and only if the production of this virtual currency was powered by at least 50% renewable energy.
The principle of a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin is relatively simple: rather than physically mining the earth to find gold, or operating money printing presses, we virtually "mine" tokens via large farms. computers that work constantly. And inevitably, all this consumes considerable electrical energy which recently made Tesla change its mind about accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment. Too polluting, and not in phase with the image of a manufacturer who wants to be virtuous.
Elon Musk, however, changed - again - his opinion on this cryptocurrency. After accepting it, then refusing it, the boss of Tesla finally indicated on his Twitter account that the Californian brand would resume payments by Bitcoin only if the mining and exchanges were supplied with approximately 50% energy from renewable sources.
Recall that Tesla had purchased $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin earlier in the year. The brand then sold 10% of its portfolio, earning more than $100 million in profits.
