The boss of Tesla has confirmed that the battery of the heavyweight "Semi" will be 500 kWh in the smallest version. Which may not seem like much on paper.
If we don't know their exact capacity, the batteries of the Tesla Model S "Plaid" had been the subject of rumors announcing 120 kWh. That's a lot for a car, but what about the 500 kWh battery of the Semi, the Tesla heavyweight that will be launched in the medium term on Western markets?
On paper, that's a big number, but weighed down to the weight and the need to cover great distances, it's actually almost... low. In reality, Tesla has bet on its new 4680 batteries which promise better energy density, and therefore lower weight at equivalent capacity compared to the old version of the pack.
Initially, Tesla announced 300 miles of autonomy on the "small" battery, which represents a little more than 500 km. This is obviously much less than a diesel-powered tractor, but another variant with 600 miles of autonomy is also on the program.
However, it will be necessary to clarify a lot of things with this Semi, and in particular in terms of the activity of the drivers. Indeed, the time spent at the service station is counted in the driver's working hours. With a 500 to 1000 kWh battery to recharge and lower autonomy, everything could change, with, in the long term, a logical impact on the price of transport (and products) if heavy goods vehicles were to switch massively to electric. battery operated.
