The Tokyo Motor Show, which has been held every two years without interruption since 1954, will be canceled in 2021. Frankly not reassuring news for the Olympic Games.
The Tokyo Motor Show has been held every two years, in the fall, since 1954. The 2011 tsunami and other major crises did not get the better of this major automotive event, which brings together more than 1.3 million people. But this year, it will not take place, Covid obliges. The Japanese situation is not improving with a major fourth wave, which is forcing organizers to cancel the 2021 edition several months in advance.
The association of Japanese manufacturers, which manages the show, has decided to postpone it to 2022 or 2023, under a new name: the "Tokyo Mobility Show". A show which has not yet unveiled its contours but which will probably be more generous in its exhibition themes, linked to mobility in the broad sense of the term.
This is the boss of the JAMA (Japanese Association of Manufacturers), who is none other than the CEO of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, who announced the news earlier this week. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga could announce a state of emergency in major cities. Suffice to say that it could not be worse at the dawn of the organization of the Olympic Games this summer.
