The French tanker changes its name. Total comes from TotalEnergies, which is no coincidence: the tricolor giant wants to highlight its activities that are now more diversified, and no longer solely focused on black gold.
Some will say that an oil company trying to green its image could not be more hypocritical and unwelcome. But that is exactly what one of the world's largest manufacturers of fossil fuels has just done. The French oil company Total becomes TotalEnergies, to illustrate the fact that the company is diversifying and betting more and more on renewables.
"Energy is life. We all need it and it is a source of progress. So today, to contribute to the sustainable development of the planet in the face of the climate challenge, we are moving forward, together, towards new energies. Energy is reinventing itself and this energy path is ours. Our ambition is to be a major player in the energy transition. This is why Total is transforming and becoming TotalEnergies", commented the CEO of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné.
Beyond oil and gas, TotalEnergies is thus wind, solar, hydrogen and more traditional electricity. Like Norway, which finances a world of transport without emissions thanks to fortunes from oil, TotalEnergies specifies that "the transition was not a break" and that the significant revenues from oil and gas had to be maintained to finance new energies.
