Problems at the British border and the shutdown of links between the United Kingdom and Europe have forced Toyota to temporarily close its two British factories and that of Valenciennes.
The French factory of Toyota, near Valenciennes, may be living its last hours of activity in 2020. The Japanese manufacturer confirmed to AFP yesterday that the cessation of links between Europe and the United Kingdom against the backdrop of a new strain of the virus Covid was going to create a shortage of spare parts to produce vehicles.
"In view of expected parts shortages due to transportation delays and the uncertain nature of the duration of border closures for logistics activities, Toyota Motor Europe, Toyota's European headquarters, has decided to conduct a controlled shutdown. of its production activities for its French site (Toyota Motor Manufacturing France) and its two English sites (Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK)".
This morning, according to Toyota, there were still about 7 hours of production left before the stock ran out, theoretically at the beginning of the afternoon. Since the factory was to stop, anyway, on December 24 for the holidays, it seems clear that we are approaching the end of the year for the Onnaing lines, near Valenciennes, where the the Yaris, and where the Yaris Cross will be assembled.
Toyota's management, however, said it hoped to be able to restart production as early as December 28. If, of course, the supply issues (related to both Covid and Brexit) are resolved.
