Volkswagen's "Power Day" was an opportunity to make great announcements on electromobility within the German group, which plans to have 6 batteries manufacturing factories in Europe.
Volkswagen has just unveiled its strategy concerning electric mobility in the future years and decades, and the least we can say is that the German giant intends to put the package. He indeed announces a total of 6 "gigafactories" in Europe, for an equivalent of 240 GWh of batteries produced per year by 2030.Volkswagen will not build all the factories, since some already exist: the group plans to order for 11 billion euros in batteries in Northvolt, the Swedish manufacturer of batteries and partner of VW, with a climb to 40 GWh fairly quickly.
By way of comparison, these 240 GWh are close to what Tesla foresees for all of Europe when the large Berlin factory will be operational.Beside, the Total/PSA project in France, however, seems thin with its 48 GWh by 2030.
VW announcements do not stop there since 18,000 new recharge points are also scheduled in Europe, but also a unit cost of batteries divided by two thanks to the high rise in production. The goal is to go under the € 100 kWh on the Small Autos segment. And on manufacturing, Volkswagen and its partners intend to reach 95 % recycling of raw materials intended for batteries.
