Volkswagen will end the sale of thermal vehicles in Europe between 2033 and 2035.
Volkswagen will soon be a 100% electric brand, at least on the Old Continent. Klaus Zellmer, VW's sales director, specified the manufacturer's timetable in an interview with a German daily: "In Europe, we will leave the market for combustion engine vehicles between 2033 and 2035".
An important announcement for such a manufacturer… but which is no longer really surprising. This comes a few days after that of Audi, which will only launch electric models from 2026. Above all, it is an inevitable development for the European market, where the standards are the most stringent. Added to this are plans to outright ban the sale of thermal models in Western European countries.
Volkswagen has already set itself the goal of making 70% of its sales in Europe with electric cars by 2030. After having marketed the compact ID.3 and the ID.4 SUV, the brand will continue to launch ID models. These will quickly constitute a second VW range, parallel to the thermal offer!
Volkswagen will not, however, become a fully electric brand in 2035. According to Klaus Zellmer "as a mass manufacturer, VW has to adapt to the different speeds of transformation in different regions". The end of thermal will therefore come later in the United States and China, two huge markets for the brand. It will wait longer "in South America and Africa, due to the lack of political framework conditions and infrastructure, it will take a little longer."
