According to an American study, emergency braking in reverse would significantly reduce accidents, especially in the city, and reduce the bill for repairs and insurance premiums.
Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) has been compulsory on new vehicles since early 2020.But it only works before, on the principle of the detection of obstacle or vehicle which would brake suddenly. In the back, on the other hand, nothing.
Or almost, since some manufacturers already offer a rear anti -collision assistant, very practical when you have to get out of a reversal parking space, often blind.A study by the American Institute of Road Safety shows that it would however be possible to reduce the risk of material damage by 28 %.
The IIHS explains that no other driving assistant or on -board system today allows such a drop in collisions and clashes. With the AEB, emergency braking in reverse is the only device allowing a two -digit drop in accidents.
In comparison to the pre -independent emergency braking, however, the reduction in bodily injury is much less. And it makes sense: the clashes in reverse are often made at reduced speed, and generate much less risk of injury or death than a more violent frontal shock.
And who says reduction of material damage, says less repairs to be assumed for insurers, and therefore, in theory, bonuses that drop. This could very well encourage the European authorities to vote for the obligation to assist driving in new vehicles.
