The Peugeot 205, the "sacred number" as it was called at the time, beyond having saved Peugeot, has always been a simple, economical and inexpensive city car, both new and used. Even the GTI traded 10 years ago for a pittance. But that was before. The "youngtimer" phenomenon has been there, causing prices to explode. So today, how much does a 205 cost?
Manufactured between 1982 and 1998 in almost 5.3 million copies, the 205 is the "sacred number" that saved Peugeot from a bad patch, after the takeover of Chrysler Europe in 1978.
Well designed and studied, generally well manufactured, it instantly met the demand of many motorists, and was even the best-selling car in France in 1984 and 1985, then 1990.
The GTI, today the symbol of the 205, and of a whole generation of small rough-hewn sports cars.Available in many versions, from the less powerful and very affordable GE/GL or later the famous "Junior", to the most exclusive Lacoste, Gentry, Roland Garros, in petrol, then in diesel, and even turbo-diesel, in mechanical or automatic gearbox, the range will of course be headed by sports cars, the stripped down Rallye, but above all the GTIs, in 1.6 105 then 115 hp and 1.9 130 hp. Not to mention the incredible T16, derived from competition and rally-raid.
We found everything and everyone found their happiness.
Of course, with such success in new cars, the 205 has also taken the top places on the sales podium on the second-hand market for years.
At unbeatable prices, especially for the classic, mid-range GR/XR/GRD/XRD versions, the Junior or the more powerful XS/XT or GT.
The 205 Junior, the archetype of the era of the economical city car, but stripped down. And for a long time, after the end of its marketing in 1998, we were able to find very affordable second-hand copies. A Junior for €1,000 or less, and many cars were under €1,500/€2,000, in very decent condition.
Even the sporty GTI, although much more expensive to buy, or the top-of-the-range Gentry, had falling odds. It must be said that the GTIs have sold more than 330,000 copies.
Since the youngtimer phenomenon, prices have exploded! But since 98, the number of rolling copies of 205 has continued to decrease, quite logically. The various scrapping bonuses have done them a lot of harm, and the inevitable exits from the road leading to scrapping by another route too.
At the same time, the "youngtimer" phenomenon, which consists for a forty/fifty-year-old buying a car in which he was traveling with his parents, out of nostalgia and passion, has also been there, restoring a certain interest, even a certain interest. , to many models, including of course the Peugeot 205.
This led, little by little, to raise the ratings and selling prices of certain versions.
The 205 Rallye, the basic sports car, stripped of everything, very light, was worth much less than the GTI, it joins it today in odds. Not all of them, but the special series, the GTI, the Rallye, the high-end Roland Garros or Gentry, the GT/XS, the CT/CJ or CTI cabriolets now sometimes display crazy prices. Even the automatic version, with its domed bonnet to make room for the engine/box assembly, is starting to cost a lot.
We have decided to group together the claims of sellers in a table, according to the statements made on the sites La Centrale or especially leboncoin, the latter concentrating more than 1,400 advertisements to date, against 36 for La Centrale, where the average of age of the cars on sale is much more recent.

But for a GTI, a Turbo-diesel, a Rally, even high mileage can be worth a lot, if the car has been restored.
When you think that with the €3,500 requested for a 205 Junior from 1987 or 88, you can afford a 207 HDI 90 or 1.4 VTI 95 from 2007 or 2008. dream of a whole generation of buyers, who are ready to pay the price to drive in the car of their childhood, or who thinks of making an investment for the future (certainly rightly so...)
